ISURA began in 2001 with its first worldwide courses on ultrasound and regional anaesthesia. In 2004, the same group hosted the first International Symposium on Ultrasound and Regional Anaesthesia, and since 2006, the conference has been held in alternate years in Toronto, Canada, and Schwetzingen, Germany. As you can see in our programme and in our faculty list, the conference has continued to grow, which enables us to invite the top international researchers, developers and teachers in this field.

Ultrasound-guided procedures for regional anaesthesia blocks are becoming the most likely standard, and research in the field has focused on the imaging technology in a much broader range. Clinical education, meanwhile, has been overrun by interventional procedures. Therefore, we have divided the teaching process in a threefold manner: The first day of the conference will include either a refresher course or a basic course for the beginner. The advanced part of the conference will feature a wide spectrum of topics, including detailed aspects of interventional procedures and additional workshops. Within the conference, we will cultivate the character of a symposium with clinical workshops and an added discussion forum for interaction. As a satellite to the symposium, a Cadaver Workshop in Innsbruck will aim to improve imaging techniques and needle processing through active, interventional hands-on training.

As in previous years, the 2009 conference will be a meeting of the pioneers in this field, produced for the clinical and scientifically interested anaesthetist. The gathering remains an unparalleled opportunity for interaction and exchange. We would be happy to meet you at ISURA 2009.
